Dependente da importação de trigo, o Brasil começa um movimento, adotado no passado no plantio de soja, para se tornar autossuficiente na produção do grão e mudar a má fama da farinha nacional. É no calor e na seca do Cerrado que agricultores pretendem alavancar a lavoura. Eles apostam nas características da região e na tecnologia do preparo de novas sementes.
O potencial do Cerrado é promissor na quantidade e na qualidade da matéria-prima do pãozinho do dia a dia. Na colheita deste mês, em Goiás, surgiram registros de produtividade três vezes superior à média nacional, de 45 sacas por hectare.
Estima-se que o Brasil vai gastar este ano aproximadamente R$ 10 bilhões com a importação do grão e da farinha de trigo. Para além do respiro econômico, há um aspecto político no esforço nacional em direção à autossuficiência. O presidente Jair Bolsonaro tem ressalvas ideológicas e busca um distanciamento da Casa Rosada desde que Alberto Fernandez assumiu o governo argentino. O mandatário e sua vice, Cristina Kirchner, lidam com uma profunda crise econômica.
O governo brasileiro, porém, não vê riscos à balança comercial. A Argentina tem aberto mercados para seu trigo na Ásia e agora tenta introduzir no Brasil, seu principal comprador de trigo, um polêmico cereal transgênico, ainda mais resistente.
Hoje, metade das 12 milhões de toneladas de trigo consumidas no País por ano é importada. A Embrapa vê no cultivo do “trigo tropical” a melhor chance de dobrar as 6 milhões de toneladas que hoje são produzidas em 2,2 milhões de hectares em diversas áreas do País e economizar R$ 400 milhões com a redução nas importações. A expectativa para as novas safras é empurrada pelos resultados considerados surpreendentes, em 2019 e 2020 – inclusive com um inédito cultivo no Ceará a partir de variedades desenvolvidas para o Cerrado.
O governo planeja, a partir de 2021, ampliar em 50% os cerca de 200 mil hectares de trigo plantados no Cerrado. A meta é alcançar 1 milhão, até 2025, em regiões de Goiás, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul e Minas Gerais, o que pode reduzir custos de derivados.
